Join us for a Bird Club meeting tonight, at the Douglas-Hart Nature Center. Everyone with an interest in birds is welcome! Experienced birder and photographer Ron Bradley will be sharing his favorite photos from his recent birding trip to California.
Meeting business will include:
  • We will seek members to volunteer to plan our first club opportunities. Volunteer commitment will be just one event, speaker, or other opportunity. The November 25 meeting will be one assignment.
  • We will discuss member contact information and how we want to share it safely.
  • We will discuss the topic you bring to the meeting.... What will it be?

Hello everyone!! I was so excited to hear about the big turn out at the first bird club meeting. A big thank you to our assistant educator, Dakota Radford for organizing and getting this club up and running!! I cannot wait to hear about the things this club has planned!

The October meeting had a great presentation from one of our members, Ron Bradley, and we now have presentations booked for the November 25th meeting (Tyler Funk) and the December 30th meeting (Brett Williamson)!

The business side of the meeting included more brainstorming but some key points were :

1) If you have any suggestions for a name other than “Bird Club” we can collect suggestions and vote on a real name at some point, if there is interest.

2) Because we do not want to publish our individual contact information online, for now we will try to just communicate through posts on the webpage (http://www.dhnature.org/bird-club) and the ability for me to send out group emails if there is relevant upcoming “local birding” news we need to get out. We will see how often that comes up. If you have info you would like sent out, post it on the webpage or send it to me for emailing.

3) Members requested that we might post some of the birds seen on the weekly bird walks on the webpage. Also requested were PDF’s of files such as the Douglas-Hart bird list and Barry Hunt’s bird calendar. These files will be on the webpage soon for everyone to access.

4) The Christmas Bird Count will be coming up. Larry Thorsen & Tyler Funk coordinate this count and will let us know if there are times that learning birders could tag along.

5) The last scheduled Douglas-Hart bird walk with James Ewing was Oct. 30. If someone volunteers to “be there,” we could schedule and advertise future walks for members to come together for.

6) On Wednesday, November 12, 6-7pm, Douglas-Hart will be hosting Bob Gillespie, natural resource coordinator of for the IL Natural History Survey’s Greater Prairie Chicken population at Prairie Ridge Natural Area near Newton, IL. This free talk will share the history of the emblematic Greater Prairie Chicken, the great peril it faces in contemporary times, and current recovery efforts. The program is Free, but your registration is appreciated. (217-235-4644)

I just want to echo Jennifer's appreciation for Dakota in getting this going for us! It is so nice to be part of a group with an interest in birds and birding again and she has worked hard to make this happen. Also a big thank you to Ron Bradley for a great first talk for the group on his trip to CA -- really great pictures, we enjoyed it very much!

This morning I stayed indoors (getting over a head cold so perhaps I can be excused for not getting out on this beautiful but brisk morning), and watched our feeders. The following put in an appearance:

1. Mourning Dove
2. Red-bellied Woodpecker
3. Downy Woodpecker
4. American Crow (seen & heard flying over our back woods)
5. Blue Jay (heard in the distance)
6. White-breasted Nuthatch
7. Tufted Titmouse
8. Carolina Chickadee
9. American Goldfinch
10. House Finch

Looking forward to hearing what you all are seeing.

Apart from that, I just wanted to say that if we get interest in a cold day of December birding from new folks for Christmas Bird Count, Katy and I will be glad to have them along. After all, we were warmly welcomed by CBC counters ourselves and learned a lot from them. We are by no means 'experienced' birders but we'd welcome the chance to pay the kindness forward as best we can!

Good birding,
Matt & Katy Fain
