Friendship Garden

Helen Douglas-Hart started Friendship Garden in 1963. It is located at 17th Street and Lafayette Avenue in Mattoon. The garden is maintained by the Douglas-Hart Foundation and Nature Center. There are several benches and picnic tables for reading, enjoying your lunch, or simply relaxing.

Pictured below is the grand opening of the celebration of Friendship Garden. Mattoon Mayor dedicated the garden on June 15, 1963, to a large crowd of around 100 people. Do you know anyone who was present for the grand opening? Share the story with us by emailing dhfoundation@dhnature.org.
