Next Meeting: November 25th, 6pm!

Anyone with an interest in birds should join us for the November meeting (last Tuesday of the month at 6pm).
  • Tyler Funk will be providing a presentation from his extensive birding experiences. Check out some of Tyler's excellent photography at https://www.flickr.com/photos/tylerdfunk/page2/. We learned last meeting that one of Tyler's photos was selected for print on the back of the Illinois Ornithological Society's "Meadowlark" journal. Congratulations to him! We are looking forward to Tyler's presentation at the meeting.
  • Linda Foster will be starting a new tradition for the meeting, a short "Tips for Beginning Birders" portion to share a few bits of advice and selected resources with those just entering the hobby. Linda would like a partner or two to help put together one of these short presentations for each meeting.

How many people would be interested in continuing the Thursday morning birdwalks at Douglas-Hart Nature Center?
If said "anyone interested show up at 8am any Thursday morning" would we get a group?

THE GREATER PRAIRIE CHICKEN IN ILLINOIS; A STORY OF PERSISTENCE AND RARITY Wed., Nov. 12 6-7p.m. at Douglas-Hart Nature Center.

Greater prairie chickens are an iconic grassland bird of the prairies of North America. Once an abundant and exploited species, populations of greater prairie chickens have declined precipitously in Illinois. The conservation of prairie chickens has a long history and current efforts to translocate prairie chickens from Kansas to Prairie Ridge State Natural Area continues this important legacy. Prairie Ridge Natural Area is located in Jasper County, Illinois. Prairie Ridge supports a remnant greater prairie chicken population and more than 80 of Illinois' species in greatest need of conservation. Join Bob Gillespie, Natural Resources Coordinator with the Illinois Natural History Survey, who works to protect and recover species and delights in telling the story of conservation. Bob will share the history and beauty of this fantastically emblematic wildlife species, current recovery efforts, and the great peril it faces in contemporary times. "Bob Gillespie is a Natural Resources Coordinator with the Illinois Natural History Survey. Based at Prairie Ridge State Natural Area, a large grassland habitat complex situated in southeastern Illinois. This program is free, refreshments served. Adult Program or Family Program.

Cooper's Hawks are really hunting the bird feeders here at Douglas-Hart. They are dive-bombing in several times a day lately.

Check out the new "Birding Resources" button on the right. If you have things (documents, links, descriptions, etc.) to add please send them to me! (volunteercoord@consolidated.net)

Hello! I know this is kinda off topic however , I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog article or vice-versa? My site covers a lot of the same topics as yours and I think we could greatly benefit from each other. If you’re interested feel free to shoot me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Terrific blog by the way!
