Date: Tuesday, August 27 6pm
Location: Douglas-Hart Nature Center
Presenter: Samantha Pasko
Topic: Chickadees
Eastern Illinois University graduate student Samantha Pasko will share stories and findings from her local research conducted on chickadee nestlings!
Check out what Samantha has to say about her presentation: "With animal behavior and ecology being my primary career focuses, I have chosen a masters thesis project focusing on native chickadee hybridization. I study two local species that overlap in territory, thus creating a contact zone. Within this zone, these two species breed with each other and create hybrid offspring. My project is studying behavior, morphological, and genetic characteristics of these two chickadee species. I am able to differentiate between hybrid birds and pure individuals. Research like this gives us the ability to better understand these species, as well as their populations as a whole."
Samantha will be sharing pictures and stories from her research, and will be setting up a mist net at Douglas-Hart to show us how she captures and handles birds, hopefully with LIVE wild birds to demonstrate on!
We would love to have you join us!
