In the Community

Community Outreach Volunteer
In community- Adult/Families
We try to be in the community whenever we can. However, with a small staff, that isn't always possible. Help us by walking in a parade or running a booth for us (we would train you for whatever you need).

Accessibility requirements: vary depending on location. Can include public speaking at booths or walking along roads for parades
Picture
Festivals
DHNC, FG, WG- Adult/Families
As a non-profit, festivals are a key part of our funding. Whether you want to dress in a costume, work logistics (food, organizing groups, etc.), or work a booth (craft, game, information, etc.), there is something for everyone.

Accessibility requirements: vary depending on festival. Can include walking up to a mile on our flat trail, hospitality, and adaptability

Tour Guide
WS- Adult

Our tour guides are trained members of the community who lead scheduled groups around The Whiteside Garden. We provide training to all our guides on what spots they may want to mention and how to guide a group.

Accessibility requirements: hike up to a mile along rough terrain, public speaking, ability to retain general talking points

Hosting
DHNC & WG- Adult/Families
Our hosts watch our locations when staff are unable to be present or are busy (such as with a program). This allows the community to have access to our properties. In 2021, hosts helped almost 1500 guests access our facilities. Background check required.

Accessibility requirements: speaking to the public

Environmental Education

Curriculum Developer
DHNC, FG, WS- Adult
Education is one of our core focuses for all three of our locations. Our curriculum developers would assist our education team in creating curriculum for our programs as well as study guides for our Eco Meet.

Accessibility requirements: Ability to use templates and search relevant information

Special Events Helper
DHNC, FG, WS- Adult

Our special event helpers assist us as we hold programs. Whether we need someone to lend a hand in the classroom or run a booth during an event, extra hands help. A background check is required.

Accessibility requirements: vary depending on event but could include hiking up to a mile on our flat trails, ability to bend and pick up

Program Assistant
DHNC & WS-Adult

Our program assistants help set up our various programs (educational and festival). There's always something to prep for, from cutting and laminating to setting up decorations.

Accessibility requirements: include ability to complete repetitive movement, bend, and pick up

Exhibit Creator
DHNC- Adults
Walk on the wild side with us as we work to create exciting and informative exhibits in our Nature Center to help encourage patrons to be involved in nature.

Accessibility requirements: vary depending on project
