Pecan is pretty tree that is a favorite of people and many animals throughout the year, but was chosen for summer interest because they offer great shade on hot, sunny days.

  • Roasted pecan shells were used as a substitute for coffee during World War II
  • The wood is often used for items where strength is important--ladders, flooring, and tool handles
  • The "illinoinensis" in the scientific name refers to when Thomas Jefferson grew Pecan trees in Monticello and send "Illinois nuts" to George Washington
