Programs and classes are listed in order based on date of occurrence. After each description it will tell you whether a program is for adults, youth, or family.

2010 Summer Camps!

Nature Tails

First and third Tuesday of the month. 10:00am

For ages 1-4. Parents bring your little one for a lapsit program guaranteed to tickle your little ones’ senses! Programs vary, but may include songs, puppet shows, activities, crafts, fingerplays, etc. $1 for members, $2 for non-members. Registration is appreciated but not required. Adult and child program.

Nature’s Discretion: The Gulf Oil Spill

Friday, July 23, 4-5pm

Let’s discuss the matters of the Gulf Oil Spill. Refreshments served. No registration required. Ages 18+

A Bug Huntin' We Will Go

Saturday, July 31, 10:30am - Noon

Participants will explore the nature center in search of bugs and examine their critters in a bug hotel they make to take home with them. Ages 5-10. $3 for members, $5 for non-members. Youth program

Homeschool Naturalist: Bug Hunt

Thursday, August 5 10-11:30am

Are you a homeschool parent? Looking for another learning avenue? Bring your child/ren to the Homeschool Naturalist Series, the first Thursday of every month. $4 for up to three family members if you are Douglas-Hart Nature Center members, otherwise it is $6 for up to three family members. Each additional family member is $1.  Grab some nets and hike into the tallgrass prairie – what wonderful insects can we find. Call the nature center to register 217-235-4644. Family program.

Turtle Power

Friday, August 6, 2-3:30pm

Explore DHNC’s wetlands in search of turtles, get up close to our resident turtles and make a craft. For ages 4-8. $1 for members, $3 for non-members. Youth program

Curious About Colors

Saturday, August 7th, 1:00 - 2:30

We will explore the world of colors by making a tie dye t-shirt. Ages 6-12. $6 for members, $8 for non-members. Youth program

Nature in the Arts: Leaf Shaped Birdbaths

Saturday, August 7, 3-4pm

Leaf Shaped Birdbaths Let’s become artisans and mold are own birdbath. Using giant leafs and cement your elegant birdbath will be the topic of conversation – because you were the sculptor! Refreshments served. Pricing per person is $10 for members, $12 for non-members.

Walk the Darkened Trail

Saturday, August 7, 7:30-9pm

We’ll start the evening preparing smores’ over the campfire then hike the trails in search of the unknown. All ages welcome, children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult. Members: $2, Non-members: $4 per person. Family Program.

Firefly In The Sky

Tuesday, August 10, 7-8:30pm

With a quick flash, the light is gone. Come explore the trails at the Douglas Hart Nature Center to learn about these fascinating insects. Make and take a special craft too! Registration required. Ages 6-9. $2 for members, $4 for non-members. Youth program

Nature’s Discretion: Global Warming

Sunday, August 15, 2-3pm

Let’s discuss climate change and global warming. Articles for this class can be found on the nature centers website www.dhnature.org. Refreshments served. Ages 18+

Enchanted: Fairies Aren’t That Far Far Away

Friday, August 27, 4-5:30pm

Mystical creatures tend to make their homes in nature. Explore Douglas-Hart to learn the secrets of the fairies and how to attract them to your own home. Ages 4-10. Free for members, $2 for non-members. Youth program

Homeschool Naturalist: Birding

Thursday, September 2 10-11:30am

Are you a homeschool parent? Looking for another learning avenue? Fall Bird Walks begins September 2

Join us every Thursday, beginning September 2 for our Fall Bird Walk. This program is free and open to all levels of bird watchers from the beginner to the expert. Walks begin at 8:00am and refreshments are served. Registration is not required.

Nature in the Arts: Canvas Bag Campaign

Sunday, September 12, 2:00-3:00pm

Canvas Bag Campaign Go green with a canvas bag. Paint it, stamp it, press it with flowers, it’s your creation! Advance registration is required. Refreshments served. All ages welcome, children under 8 must be accompanied with a paying adult. Pricing per person or bag is $3 for members, $5 for non-members.

Grandparent’s Day

Sunday, September 12, 1-4pm

Special games, activities and refreshments will be set up around the nature center for families to play. Free!

Brownie Girl Scouts Program

Monday, September 13, 5-6:30pm

Brownie Girl Scouts can earn their SENSES badge. $5 per scout includes program and badge. Call the Nature Center to register 217-235-4644.

Embarras Volunteer Stewards Workday

Saturday, September 18, 9:00am – 11:00am

Help the DHNC staff and EVS members improve the Nature Center's grounds. We will be planting native trees and shrubs and removing exotic species. Workdays typically last about 2 hours and refreshments will be served afterwards. These workdays are excellent service opportunities for community groups. Please call the nature center to register your group.

Little Tike Hike

First and third Monday of the month from 3:30-4:30pm

Bring your children, ages 4-9 for an after school program. The first and third Monday of each month. Pricing per child is: $2 for members, $4 for non-members. Classes resume September 20th as we learn about the Cowbird! Youth program

Nature’s Discretion: Farming

Sunday, September 20, 4:30-5:30pm

Let’s discuss the impact of farming on natural areas. Articles for this class can be found on the nature centers website www.dhnature.org. Refreshments served. Ages 18+.

Junior Girl Scouts Program

Friday, September 24, 4:30-6:30pm

Brownie Girl Scouts can earn their YOUR OUTDOOR SURROUNDINGS badge. $5 per scout includes program and badge. Call the Nature Center to register 217-235-4644.
